Report Potholes in Prescott - Help Make Your Community Better!

March 15th, 2008 tanderson Posted in Uncategorized No Comments »

The City of Prescott recently launched an innovative online interactive community reporting vehicle - the Pothole Reporting Page.  It is a pilot program to gather information from Prescott citizens via an online map interface.

Google Earth will allow users to report pothole locations and click on them - this prompts a form fill for more information about the pothole.  Submission causes the information to get logged into a growing database with longitude and latitude which then gets compared to the city address databases so street crews can find the location and fix the pothole.  Ingenious!

The city hopes to expand this program to open space and trails in the coming months.  Prescott citizens will also be able to view GIS data and 3D terrains soon.

The pilot is the first of many geared to help make the City of Prescott website a valuable, interactive tool for its citizens.

Prescott residents can still report potholes by phone: 928-777-1666.

Arizona: A Solar Energy Powerhouse?

March 2nd, 2008 tanderson Posted in Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Arizona is thinking about the future.  Lawmakers want to tap into solar power to help smart growth and continued development.  There are at least six bills on the state docket that address solar energy concerns.  They aim to create tax breaks for power plant developers and help homeowners, businesses and schools convert to solar power.

Becoming a solar energy powerhouse is no easy task.  States compete against one another to provide the most inviting packages for solar power parts manufacturers to relocate.  The Arizona Corporation Commission has mandated public utilities generate 15% of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025. A combination of tax breaks and pressure on state utilities will most likely be needed to make these programs a success.

A breakdown of Current Arizona Solar Energy Bills:

  • HB 2613: Would create a property tax break for all power plants generating two or more megawatts of electricity from renewable sources and for manufacturers of renewable energy equipment. Sponsors: Reps. Lucy Mason, R-Prescott, Tom Prezelski, D-Tucson, and Sen. Richard Miranda, D-Phoenix.
  • HB 2615: Standardizes building permit fees municipalities and counties charge for solar panel construction. Sponsors: Reps. Mason, Ed Ableser, D-Tempe and Michele Reagan, R-Scottsdale.
  • HB 2766: Creates energy efficiency standards for residential and commercial construction, state buildings and schools. Sponsors: Reps. Mason, Chad Campbell, D-Phoenix and Marian McClure, R-Tucson.
  • HB 2614: Allows renewable energy equipment to be taxed at 20 percent of its normal depreciated value until 2040. Sponsors: Rep. Mason, Sen. Miranda and Sen. Tom O’Halleran, R-Sedona.
  • HB 2738: Establishes a state grants program that would fund installation of solar technology at schools. Sponsor: Rep. Steve Farley, D-Tucson.
  • HB 2538: Requires all state parks to install shower facilities powered by solar energy within a decade. Sponsor: Reps. Krysten Sinema, D-Phoenix and Ableser.

Prescott Valley Mayor Brings Government Issues to Park View’s Eighth Grade

January 31st, 2008 Kinetic Knowledge Posted in Uncategorized No Comments »

Mayor Harvey Skoog Recently Visited a Park View Middle School Class to Discuss Prescott Valley Political Process

Fred Tupkielewicz (fondly dubbed Mr. T) is the eighth grade civics teacher at Prescott Valley’s Park View Middle School.  He recently invited Mayor Skoog to discuss political process with his classes in an effort to help them with the Project Citizen competition in March at Northern Arizona University.  The students are following political processes - from recognizing a problem to implementing a solution.  Two classes have each chosen a project - unsupervised youth and speeding were selected this year.  The students have divided into groups to learn and research different parts of the political process.

The mayor was on hand to discuss Prescott’s current policy and measures to deal with speed offenders as well as youth programs and recreation opportunities.  Students will put their experiences with interviewing, organizational, research and reporting skills to the test during Project Citizen.  Each team will have a four minute presentation and 6 minutes of questioning from the judges.  They will also be judged on their storyboards and research scrapbooks.  They must present the entire process to achieving a workable solution.

The Project Citizen Competition is on March 6th - let’s wish these young local politicians luck!
