March – Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month, Prescott Area Events
Arizona State Parks’ State Historic Preservation Office will be coordinating events throughout AZ for the 26th anniversary celebration of Archaeology and Heritage awareness this March. Prescott residents, this means fun and educational events for the whole family! Many State Parks in and around Arizona will be offering interpretive programs outlining preservation and educational efforts to safeguard history and protect Arizona’s vast set of cultural resources.
Education and entertainment combine to treat kids and adults alike to activities such as site tours, exhibits, hikes, open houses, lectures, demonstrations and more.
Although many events will happen in and around Prescott (see below), The featured event will take place in Phoenix:
Arizona Archaeology Expo
March 14 and 15
Pueblo Grand Museum and Archaeological Park
4619 E. Washington Street, Phoenix
10am to 3pm, cost: FREE
“The Expo provides a special opportunity for visitors to learn more about why it is important to preserve archaeological sites and historic places, what archaeologists, historians, and tribal members do in their jobs, and about the prehistory and history of Arizona. Both days will feature archaeology hands-on activities, craft demonstrations, and other fun and educational events.”

Cordes Junction
March 28 – Interpretive Hike: The Petroglyphs of Arrastre Creek
Suitable for Children 9 am. Sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management and Friends of the Agua Fria National Monument. Reservations required – tour is limited to 25 people. Bring water, lunch, hiking shoes, and sunscreen. High clearance vehicle required and includes a rough hike over rocky ground. Tour may be postponed in the event of bad weather. Camp Verde Area
Saturdays in March – Montezuma Castle National Monument and Tuzigoot National Monument
Call for Times. Learn about the area’s history, prehistory, and other cultural aspects from local experts. Sponsored by the National Park Service. Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. March 20 – Hike Starts Near Beaver Creek Campground
Hike and Lecture: “Sinagua Equinox Sun Calendar”
Suitable for Children 11 am – 2 pm. Sponsored by Arizona Archaeological Society – Verde Valley Chapter. A flat, 1/3 mile, hike to the site to watch the sun dagger appear, along with a lecture from Ken Zoll. Meet at the V Bar V Heritage Site. From I-17 north, take exit 298 and turn right; go 2.5 miles on Forest Rd 618. Go past the Beaver Creek Campground, then turn right into site. March 28 & 29 – Near Beaver Creek Campground
V Bar V Archaeology Discovery Days
Suitable for Children All Day. Sponsored by Coconino National Forest, Red Rock Ranger District. Come learn about ancient Indian cultures and how archaeologists study artifacts, dwellings and rock art. Take part in interactive demonstrations of ancient technology, weaving yucca fiber sandals, flint-knapping, atl-atls, and taste Hopi parched corn. Located at the V-V Heritage Site. From I-17 north, take exit 298 and turn right; go 2.5 miles on Forest Rd 618. Go past the Beaver Creek Campground then turn right into site.
