Spruce Up Your Prescott Home With Some Winter Planting

By tanderson • January 9th, 2009

Roses in Prescott AZDid you know that you could continue planting in Prescott all year long?  If you are considering selling your Prescott home, adding landscaping is a great way to boost the value.  Right now the planting selection is focused on winter evergreens, spring bloomers and some bare root varieties.  Container grown trees and shrubs are the easiest to work with in the winter months.  Bare root plants, although cheaper, are difficult to root during the winter season.  Whether you’re dealing with bare roots or container grown plants, the right planting technique is always important.  Here are a few tips to ensure you get the most out of your outdoors plants:

  • The hole for your plant should be dug the same depth as the roots but twice as wide
  • Check for adequate water drainage before planting.  Fill the hole with water – all should be drained within a 12 hour time frame
  • Fill the hole with one part mulch and 2 parts native soil
  • Pack soil firmly around the root ball eliminating any air pockets
  • Mulch the top to help retain water and deter weeds
  • Fertilizers, Soil sulphur and liquid root stimulator are good things to consider to jump start growth
  • Watering every two weeks is ample until leaves begin to appear in March
  • Stake trees in the first year

The winter months in Prescott are surprisingly beautiful and are actually a bloom period for many plants such as winter jasmine, flowering quince, crocus and a wide variety of colorful roses.  Visit your nearest garden center to find out more about your winter planting options!  Happy gardening.
