A Few More Antelopes For Prescott

By tanderson • December 12th, 2008

Did you know that Arizona and Utah are regularly in the habit of trading range animals?  The two states have long traded animals pending the state of the range.  Utah will often send antelopes or turkeys and Arizona may send bighorn sheep.  Recently the Arizona Fish and Game Department accepted one hundred pronghorn antelope from an overstocked Utah.  Twenty of those animals were released into our own Prescott National Forest and the rest were sent to the far eastern part of the state.  According to Big Game Management, this has been a great year for the Arizona range and there are plenty of resources to provide for the influx of animals.

Pronghorns are native to this region - currently a herd of about 115 pronghorn roam the Prescott National Forest area.  These herding animals typically have no troubles adapting as they eventually find the herd and blend right in.  Wildlife management is a common practice, everyone predicts the new animals will do wonderfully in their new home.  For those of you Prescott outdoor enthusiasts it’s just one more beautiful marvel you may experience on your next hike!
